Aviary - Creation on the fly, is a SaaS company that offers internet applications geared for “artists of all genres”. Essentially, Aviary offers a variety of tools ranging from image editors to audio and video editors, with emphasis on the image tools.

Aviary is based in Long Island, New York and is currently invite only, though an invite can be requested at their website.

The Aviary portfolio is very conveniently made up of tools all relating in name to some form of bird; some of them are:

• Phoenix: Image editor
• Toucan: Color swatches and palettes creator
• Peacock: Computer algorithm-based pattern generator
• Raven: Vector editor

These tools are browser-based and are also downloadable as Adobe AIR applications. And of course all the tools can communicate with each other.

As Aviary says, they are “creating a complex ecosystem for artists and providing the world with free, capable collaborative tools and an approach to collaboration and rights management”. Artists can create, edit, and share works created with these tools.

An API is also in the works so that third-party developers can create complementary tools which can be used in addition to the current portfolio.
